Wikipedia : This day ( December 4, 1955), in Jackson, Mississippi, is born Cassandra Wilson, an American jazz musician, vocalist and songwriter.
Official Web Site : She began playing piano at six, guitar by the age of twelve and was working as a vocalist by the mid-’70s, singing a wide variety of material. After moving to New York City in the early 80’s, Cassandra met saxophonist Steve Coleman and became one of the founding members of the M-Base Collective.
@allmusic : After a few more albums in which she mostly performed original and rather inferior material, Wilson changed direction and performed an acoustic blues-oriented program for Blue Note called Blue Light ‘Til Dawn. By going back in time, she had found herself, and has since continued interpreting vintage country blues and folk music in fresh and creative ways up until the present day.
@last.fm : Two of her albums, Blue Skies (1988) and New Moon Daughter (1996), have topped the US jazz charts, and the latter also won her a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance in 1997. More recently, Wilson’s latest album Loverly (2008) also won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album at the 51st Grammy Awards in 2009.
