Wikipedia : This day (October 1, 1946), in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire England, is born Dave Holland, an English jazz double bassist, composer and bandleader who has been performing and recording for five decades.

Dave Holland : His path has led him from the frontiers of free improvisation to his modern ensembles that fully embody the Sam Rivers-instilled philosophy of “playing all of it.” The Wolverhampton, England, native got his big break from Miles Davis, with whom he played during the trumpet legend’s epochal Bitches Brew period.

@allmusic : Additionally, Holland is possibly the most accomplished pure jazz composer among bassists, after Charles Mingus. Holland’s small groups in the ’80s and ’90s, while working firmly within the jazz idiom, presented a fresh alternative to the fusty re-creations of the neo-boppers.

@last.fm : Holland worked as a leader and as a sideman with many other jazz artists in the 1970s, including Stan Getz, Chick Corea, Anthony Braxton, Sam Rivers, and the Gateway Trio with John Abercrombie and Jack DeJohnette.
