Wikipedia : This day (July 7, 1927), in Arlington, Oregon, is born Carl Hilding Severinsen a.k.a Doc Severinsen, an American pop and jazz trumpeter.

Doc Severinsen : “Heeeeere’s Johnny!” That lead-in, followed by a big band trumpet blast, was the landmark of late night television for three decades. The ‘Johnny’ was Johnny Carson, the announcer was Ed McMahon and the bandleader was Severinsen.

@allmusic : For 25 years, Severinsen was arguably the best-known trumpet player in America, appearing on television every weeknight as the leader of the Tonight Show Orchestra

@last.fm : In the 1960s, Severinsen also recorded with the Clarke/Boland Big Band and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis band. Although he has worked with jazz artists, most of his own recordings as a leader have consisted mainly of pop music. Several recent recordings feature him playing classical trumpet repertoire.
