Wikipedia : This day (December 15, 1936), in Ponce, Puerto Rico, is born Eddie Palmieri, a Puerto Rican pianist, bandleader and musician.
Official Website : At age 11, he auditioned at Weil Recital Hall, which is next door to Carnegie Hall, a venue as far from the Bronx as he could imagine. Possessed by a desire to play the drums, Palmieri joined his uncle’s orchestra at age 13, where he played timbales.
@allmusic : No purist, he has also shown a welcome willingness to experiment with fusions of Latin and non-Latin music. However, despite a number of stints with major labels and numerous industry awards and nominations, he has yet to break into the American record scene in a big way.
@last.fm : In 1962, Palmieri formed the band La Perfecta, which included trombone player Barry Rogers and singer Ismael Quintana. The music to the Charanga required an orchestra with a flute and violins, but Eddie also added a mixture of trumpets and trombones.
@Discogs : . Born in New York City to Puerto Rican parents, Eddie (along with his late brother Charlie) was one of the fundamental players in the evolution of Latin Jazz and Salsa. (Born December 15, 1936)
