Wikipedia : This day (July 1, 2003), in Santa Fe, New Mexico, died Herbert Jay Solomon a.k.a Herbie Mann, an American jazz flutist
Herbie Mann : His percussion-heavy ensembles, apart from the audience excitement they generated, also proved to be an excellent counterpoint to his flute, the drums creating a wall of background noise against which his solos stood out in sharp relief.
@allmusic : Mann played a wide variety of music throughout his career. He became quite popular in the 1960s, but in the ’70s became so immersed in pop and various types of world music that he seemed lost to jazz.
@last.fm : Mann was quite prolific and performed often. His first gig was playing in the Catskills at age 15. His last, on May 3, 2003 was at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival at age 73.
@Discogs : Herbie began getting involved with the newly emerging disco scene when he covered LTG Exchange’s Waterbed. It’s a very funky instrumental with a great bassline. From this album he also covered Hijack by Barrabas.
