Wikipedia : This day (August 25, 1933), in Newark, New Jersey, is born Wayne Shorter, an American jazz saxophonist and composer.

Wayne Shorter : Following his time in the service, Shorter had a brief stint in 1958 with Horace Silver and later played in the house band at Minton’s Playhouse in Harlem. It was around this time that Shorter began jamming with fellow tenor saxophonists John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins.

Wayne Shorter Interview : His career spans several generations, from his early VeeJay and Blue Note recordings, through his work with Art Blakey and Miles Davis, as well as his work with the seminal fusion group Weather Report, and his own very creative groups.

@last.fm : Davis had been searching for a saxophonist to replace John Coltrane for some time, and the new quintet is considered by many to have been Davis’s strongest working group. Shorter composed extensively for Davis (“Prince of Darkness”, “ESP”, “Footprints”, “Sanctuary”, and many others; on some albums he provided half of the compositions).
