Certainly, with all this emphasis on words, A Man Alone was intended to be a serious statement, but much of it comes off as embarrassing posturing. McKuen’s compositions are lyrically slight and musically insubstantial, but what saves A Man Alone from being a total failure is the conviction of Sinatra’s performance, as well as Don Costa’s skillful arrangements. McKuen’s poetry and lyrics allow Frank to verbalise his humanity in a very special and unique fashion that goes beyond a simple torch album, garnished with one of my personal favourite set of charts from Don Costa, usually thought of (at least by me) for the more bombastic and liberally arranged accompaniements, however here we find Costa at his very finest, reserved tonal sculptures drifting in and out of the lyrical mystique of two of the finest post war wordsmiths in Rod McKuen and his interpretive muse. It’s not a bad album, though. Several tracks are fairly successful, although I would still credit that to the power of McKuen’s songwriting and not Sinatra’s singing. As it turns out, I much prefer his talking manner, which perhaps explains why my two favourites are Empty Is and Some Traveling Music. […]
