Wikipedia : This day (January 23, 1943), in Anderson, Indiana, is born Gary Burton, an American jazz vibraphonist.
Official Site : As a member of Getz’s quartet, Burton won Down Beat magazine’s Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition award in 1965. By the time he left Getz to form his own quartet in 1967, Burton had also recorded three albums under his name for RCA.
@ allmusic : In 2009, Burton released Quartet Live featuring guitarist Pat Metheny and bassist Gary Swallow on Concord. In 2012, he released another duet recording with Corea entitled Hot House.
@last.fm : Burton’s album Duster (with guitarist Larry Coryell, bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Roy Haynes) is regarded by a minority of jazz critics to be the first jazz-rock fusion album, as it predates Miles Davis’ In A Silent Way by two years.
@Discogs : Having been self-taught on the vibraphone, Burton developed a style of four-mallet chording as an alternative to the usual two-mallets.
