Wikipedia : This day (July 6, 2019), in Rio de Janeiro died João Gilberto Prado Pereira de Oliveira a.ka. Joao Gilberto, a Brazilian singer and guitarist.
The João Gilberto Discography : I discovered João in 1962, when my jazz-fan father brought home the Brazilian singer’s first American release. Although I possessed the typical tastes of that era’s high school seniors–our idea of a cool vocal was Johnny Mathis, the makeout music of choice–from that moment I was transformed.
@allmusic : True to his image as enigmatic and eccentric, Gilberto lives a semireclusive lifestyle secure in the knowledge that, decades ago, he changed the course of Brazilian culture by making the bossa nova his music, as well as the music of Brazil.
@last.fm : A self-taught guitarist and singer, Gilberto moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1950 and joined the vocal group Garotos da lua (The Boys of the Moon) as their lead singer. After a year and a half, he was kicked out of the group for his lack of discipline and spent the next several years in a marginal existence.
