Wikipedia : This day (November 8, 1999), in New York, died Lester Bowie, an American jazz trumpet player composer, bandleader, member of the AACM and cofounder of the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians : Originally a nine piece ensemble, Brass Fantasy, Lester’s current band, now boasts ten assorted trumpets, trombones, French Horns, tuba and drums. Nothing escapes their repertoire: the free, obscure, standards of decades past, funk, Latin, R&B. Brass Fantasy plays them, pokes fun at them, but is always in good taste.
Art Ensemble of Chicago : From the 1970s, Lester Bowie has been the preeminent trumpeter of the jazz avant-garde — one of the few trumpet players of his generation to successfully and completely adopt the techniques of free jazz. Indeed, Bowie has been the most successful in translating the expressive demands of the music — so well-suited to the tonally pliant saxophone — to the more difficult-to-manipulate brass instrument.
@last.fm : In 1966 he moved to Chicago, where he worked as a studio musician, and met Muhal Richard Abrams and Roscoe Mitchell and became a member of the AACM. In 1968 he founded the Art Ensemble Of Chicago with Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, and Malachi Favors
@Discogs : Trumpet, fluegelhorn, kelphorn, vocals, percussion, composer, born 11 October 1941 in Frederick, Maryland. Met future wife Fontella Bass in an R&B band after military service. Worked in St. Louis and later moved to Chicago in 1966 where he formed Art Ensemble of Chicago with Roscoe Mitchell. Brilliant trumpet player who had a flair for the theatrical side in concert.
