UP is by no means as mind-blowing as Stanley Clarke (Nemperor, 1974) or as seminal as School Days (Nemperor, 1976), but it seems that was never his intention. Rather than making a grand statement, Clarke instead chose to find some friends, put together some charts and drop a record that was all about having fun and enjoying the process. The result does nothing to hurt his reputation but does little to inspire a rave review, either. […]

Frankly, I wish the three solo “Bass Folk Songs” – one dedicated to Charles Mingus – had been more than minimalist fragments, but when you’re Clarke you need to keep your thousand-fingered oratory in check so your friends on the disc can be happy too. […]
